jc raulston arboretum engagement photographs • • • erin & dave

What’s a quick and easy way to really get to know your clients? You could be in the middle of shooting their engagement session at the JC Raulston Arboretum on the campus of NC State University, then get caught in a torrential downpour, complete with thunder, lightening and a potentially high risk of death by electrocution. So you chat and play get-to-know-you a bit while waiting it out under a gazebo.

Meet Erin & Dave. Simply put, they’re fun, romantic, best friends and in love.

Erin is so beautiful and genuine! Dave’s a lucky man!

And then the thunder, lighting and rain started. We took a few shots under the gazebo while waiting it out.

That rain puddle photo doesn’t do the storm justice. It was crazy!

We were back at it after everything let up.

Congratulations, Erin & Dave! We can’t wait to photograph your wedding in September!

ketchie creek bakery • • • meet the vendor

We had the pleasure of working with Ketchie Creek Bakery when they did the beautiful cupcake tree for Catherine & Taylor’s wedding at The Proximity Hotel. I think this Meet the Vendor profile may have been one of my favorites to do thus far; not only are the people at Ketchie Creek Bakery super-nice and very talented, but they gave us samples to take home and taste-test! YUUMM!

Here’s a little eye candy to start things off. Be prepared to drool! (Consider yourself warned.)

Company Name: Ketchie Creek Bakery & Cafe, Mocksville, NC

Owner/Contact: Renna & Gerald Welborn

Specialty: Top quality cakes, cupcakes and baked goods for weddings, celebrations and special occasions such as birthday and anniversaries.

Areas Serviced: Ketchie Creek will deliver within about an hour radius of Mocksville, NC, but have had people come from as far as Ashville, Mt. Airy and Raleigh just to pick up their cakes!

What’s unique about your business that sets you apart from others in your field? “Ketchie Creek was established 27 years ago and many of the original family recipes are still being used today. Locals look forward to our special ‘5 Flavor Pound Cake’ and ‘Shadow Cake,’ as well as our own ‘Ketchie Creek Blend’ of coffee. All of our products, from cake batter to icing, are made from scratch. We also offer a very wide variety of breakfast and lunch foods, including Boars Head meats and cheeses. While we’ve kept the family atmosphere, we’ve recently added an online ordering function and are continually adding new items to the menu.”

What excites you when you meet a client for the first time? “We love being part of the planning process of someone’s wedding day. We also love to see the excitement on a their face when they see their cakes or cupcakes for the first time.”

If you weren’t in this business, what would you be doing? “I was actually a teacher before Gerald and I bought Ketchie Creek 2 years ago.”

winston-salem baby photographer twins • • • quinn & max

Twins are a familiar topic in our family. My grandmother was an identical twin, and, of course, Higs is an identical twin. In fact, he and his brother were so in sync in utero that his parents didn’t know they were having twins until 9 days before they were born!

When we’ve talked about what it’s like to be a twin, Higs’s answer was simple:

“I don’t know what it’s like to not be a twin.”

Interesting, but true. I have a younger brother, so I only know life as the eldest child. I don’t know what it’s like to be a middle child or even to have a sister. One thing that’s cool is that, even though Higs & his brother have so many similar interests and were difficult to physically tell apart at first, it’s been easy to differentiate their personalities since the day we met.

Meet Quinn (left) and her twin brother, Max (right).

At only a year old, they’re so in sync, yet their personalities are so easy to differentiate.

Quinn is a little sweetheart…

…and Max is inquisitive, yet laid back.

But they seem like they’re already the best of friends.

They like to play games like this one called “down/up.” Down….

Up!

Arms up!

Goldfish crackers are a favorite with these two.

I love, love, love this one.

wedding photography album • • • north carolina wedding photographer

A photography business is an every-changing thing. When we started sadie higs photography, we offered our services and products a la carte. But when we got quite a few inquiries for packages, we re-evaluated and started offering wedding photography packages, which, for the time being, has seemed to work out just fine. Some of our packages include an album and some don’t, but they can be purchased by anyone.

Last Fall we posted about the genuine leather wedding album. Since then, we made a sample album with the image cover wrap option, which we like even more, because, well, it shows off the image!

The page quality is really amazing; they’re thick and coated to avoid bending or tearing.

As opposed to the sheen fabric that coated the inside covers the genuine leather album, we chose for this image-wrap album to have a classic and simplistic flat material line the inside covers.

And, of course, our favorite feature: the gutterless spreads, which allow for images to span from one side of the album to the other without losing any of the image in the spine of the book.

Below are a few other layouts that were included in this sample album. For some of them, I wouldn’t normally put that many images on the page, but wanted to keep certain events together in this particular instance.

where did our baby go?

“Bye-bye Da Da!” he said as he waved and walked away, pushing that noisy popcorn-popper. Where did our baby go?

He’ll sit in the pile of books that he’s pulled off of his bookshelf and go through every single one, pointing and reading out loud in his own unrecognizable language.

He gives us hugs and kisses and raspberries on a regular basis, just because he wants to.

I was going through the images that Higs took of us on Mother’s Day and all of a sudden, I realized that I was looking at our little boy, not our baby. He’s happy and silly and lovable. We watch him explore and learn and figure things out. We’ve watched his personality evolve from the very beginning and it just keeps getting better every day!

I love his impromptu hugs.

He had his first swimming lesson last weekend. Once he realized that he could really splish-splash, he had a grand ol’ time!
