elon university bridal portraits • • • mary

We just got back from Mary & Chet’s fabulous wedding and, even though we’re exhausted from going non-stop, we’re excited to be able to post her bridal portraits taken at Elon University a few weeks ago! Mary was so sweet and genuine and did a fantastic job of being a beautiful bride even though it was a super-hot evening! We’ll be posting images of their Elon University wedding in a few days — stay tuned!

A photography business is an every-changing thing. When we started sadie higs photography, we offered our services and products a la carte. But when we got quite a few inquiries for packages, we re-evaluated and started offering wedding photography packages, which, for the time being, has seemed to work out just fine. Some of our packages include an album and some don’t, but they can be purchased by anyone.

Last Fall we posted about the genuine leather wedding album. Since then, we made a sample album with the image cover wrap option, which we like even more, because, well, it shows off the image!

The page quality is really amazing; they’re thick and coated to avoid bending or tearing.

As opposed to the sheen fabric that coated the inside covers the genuine leather album, we chose for this image-wrap album to have a classic and simplistic flat material line the inside covers.

And, of course, our favorite feature: the gutterless spreads, which allow for images to span from one side of the album to the other without losing any of the image in the spine of the book.

Below are a few other layouts that were included in this sample album. For some of them, I wouldn’t normally put that many images on the page, but wanted to keep certain events together in this particular instance.

Earlier in the year, Higs & I realized that documenting the story of our clients is actually part of our own story as well. (Why it took us so long to realize that, I have no idea. We’re dorks.) While we both shoot simultaneously, there are times where one of us is getting a better shot and angle than the other, so we’re able to catch some behind the scenes action. It’s so much fun for us to look back at all we’ve done this year because it makes us realize how lucky we are to do something we love, document a special time in the lives of others and meet some really amazing people all at the same time. In addition to the behind the scenes images, we thought it would be interesting for our readers to see some of the resulting images. Enjoy!

Higs shooting Jackie’s bridal photos at Elon University. That image he got on the right is one of my favorites of the year.

This is why we stay behind the camera.

Megan’s bridal photos at Tanglewood Park. The set-up on the left and the resulting shot on the right.

Megan & Jermey’s Tanglewood Park wedding.

Jackie & Jordan’s Alamance County wedding.

Their Alamance Country Club wedding reception was so much fun! Here’s Higs & I shooting each other at the same time.

Jessica & Michael’s Winston-Salem engagement photos. Left: what Higs saw. Right: what I saw.

A few random shots from Keren & Robbie’s wedding.

Standing on chairs = fun shots.

Renee’s bridal photos at The Captain White House in Graham were some of my favorite of the year.

At Renee & Jason’s Graham, NC wedding.

We document the whole day. This is Renee & Jason having a bite before they were announced into their reception.

I love Higs. And I’m sure he loves me for posting these awesomely-flattering images of him at their reception.

Ashley & TJ’s just because photos were kind of impromptu. They’re friends of ours and we ended up shooting them when we were hanging out one evening, so Nolan tagged along. He is such an awesome, laid-back kid!

Alon & Ira’s Greensboro-High Point Marriott Airport wedding photos.

Left: We asked Higs to hold Ira’s glasses for a second while I took a quick shot and I turned around to find him trying them on.

Higs & I got to Danielle & Ray’s wedding a little early so we decided to scope the place out. I, being as graceful as I am, rolled my ankle and went sprawling on my hands and knees. I skinned my hand and ripped my favorite pants. I didin’t have a camera in hand so no equipment was harmed in this act of clumsiness. Whew.

We have a tendancy to put ourselves in awkward positions just to get a shot. Totally worth it.

I was shooting the image on the left of Danielle’s flower girl, and then I got a call from Higs to say he could see me in the window.

Left: what I was shooting. Right: my husband sneaking into my shot.

Left: Higs in action. Right: his resulting shot.

Left: Higs shooting Melissa & Ryan’s just because photos. Right: one of his resulting shots.

Higs got me (left) as I was shooting Melissa & Ryan (right)…

…then I got him shooting me.

We never invade our clients’ personal space. Ever.

Higs got me as I was shooting a series of Candice & Daniel in Charlotte.

And finally, just a wide shot as I made my way back from scoping out an area during the shoot with Candice & Daniel.

raleigh photog shootout • • • part three

So this is the last (and my favorite) part of the Raleigh Photog Shootout. It was led by Kevin Milz of Kevin Milz Photography and was held at Solas in downtown Raleigh. It was my favorite for a few reasons (in no particular order): I’m really happy with the shots I was able to get, our model (Courtney) is gorgeous (and super-nice!), Solas offered a wide variety of unique and modern backgrounds, and Kevin showed us some great lighting tricks (which, while we typically shoot with all natural light, I got really excited while shooting these and might have to start incorporating it!).

The booths at Solas rocked.

Yea, these next few were shot in the men’s bathroom. I stood on a chair to shoot over everyone and get these.

The next few were shot in the stairwell, then we headed up to the rooftop patio.

raleigh photog shootout • • • part two

While there were actually four sessions of the Raleigh Photog Shootout, I’m combining the 2nd and 3rd sessions as one part for the blog because they’ve got similar styles. The sessions were led by Neil of Neil Boyd Photography and Cara & Jonathan of F8 Photo Studios.

If you check out Neil’s blog, you’ll see the images he was getting as the prime shooter for his session. But I love this one I got from the side — it’s like she’s channeling Marilyn Monroe.

A unique composition due to the challenge of working around other photographers.

This is the third session, shot in a back room of the parking garage basement. Awesome!

We worked with unique spot lighting, which I had never done before. I love this one because of their shadow.

Part three (my favorite!) is up next!

P.S. Check out The Beautiful Mess — they posted images of us from our shoot swap!
